Nest Learning Thermostat in Smart Home

The next in our series of blogs introducing the products and technology that we are including in our Smart Homes is the Nest Learning Thermostat.

One of the pioneers in smart home technology, Nest Labs introduced its Learning Thermostat in 2011. (It was inspired when one of the founders was looking for a thermostat for his vacation home and found all of the available thermostats on the market to be inadequate.)

Nest’s Learning Thermostat is an electronic, programmable, self-learning wi-fi-enabled thermostat that optimizes heating and cooling to conserve energy. Homeowners regulate the thermostat for a few weeks in order to provide a reference data set. After that, the Nest uses a learning algorithm to study people’s schedule, what temperatures they like, and when they like them. It uses built-in sensors and phone locations to shift into energy saving mode when it realizes nobody is at home

Designed to go unnoticed, the Nest Thermostat blends into any décor beautifully.

And its energy-saving features can save an average of 10% to 12% on heating bills and 15% on cooling bills. Based on typical energy costs, that’s an estimated average savings of $131 to $145 a year.

A great example of how our Smart Home products work together, Amazon Alexa links with the Nest thermostat so that homeowners can adjust temperature and comfort settings from Android or iOS devices. (Nest also integrates seamlessly with Samsung SmartThings, IFTTT, Wink, and more.) There is a Smart Home/Away feature designed to save energy and money. Plus, homeowners get free energy reports with insights on how much money has been, and tips for further savings.

To connect Amazon Alexa to the thermostat, use the Alexa app to enable Nest’s Smart Home Skills. Then, ask Alexa to discover your Nest products by saying, “Alexa, discover my devices.” (Amazon has more detailed instructions on their website if you need them.) Nest’s Smart Home Skills help integrate its products with Alexa’s voice controls. For example, with the Thermostat skill, there’s no need to go to the thermostat or find your phone, you can just tell Alexa to change the temperature of your home.

Who knew using the Nest Learning Thermostat was so easy?
