Simple Fall Maintenance Tips

Fall is officially here and the temperatures have started to finally cool off for the seasons ahead. This time of year often brings up the topics of home maintenance and making sure your home is ready for colder days ahead. If this is your first year owning a home, you may not be sure where to start. The first simple fall home maintenance tip starts on the interior of your home. Royal Oaks Homes, a premier homebuilder for new homes in Raleigh, shares the top tips to get your homer ready for the colder months ahead.

Before you turn on the heat for the first time when cooler weather rolls in, be sure to check all of your safety devices to ensure the work properly. Replace the batteries in your carbon monoxide detectors and your smoke detectors to make sure they are running properly.

It is also a good idea to replace the batteries to these devices at the same time. Another easy tip that many people don’t think about is to make sure your fire extinguisher is not expired.

The second in-home fall maintenance tip is to schedule a furnace maintenance call. Once the cold season strikes, your local HVAC service is going to be busy making house calls. Prevent being on a waiting list by getting a head start early and having someone come out and make sure your furnace is running properly. Typically, you can also get better deals in the late summer when you catch any issue opposed to the prime season in the colder months.

On the outside of your home, take a look around your home and check for any cracks in your homes foundation and seal them if necessary. Also close up any cracks in your foundation near windows or doors, because those can also let in critters like mice once the cold kicks in.

Do a check of your roof as well and make sure there aren’t any problems before the cold of winter rolls in. Any loose shingles should be replaced and you should also do a check of your gutters while you are on the roof to make sure they are clean and not filled with leaves or debris.

Lastly, before the cold weather hits this fall do yourself a favor and replace your door and window screens with storm windows. As an added benefit, add weather stripping to doors and windows to help keep cool air from seeping inside.

These simple easy fall maintenance tips will ensure you stay warm in your home when cold weather strikes.
