How to best protect your home from burglary

If you are moving into a new home in Raleigh or have already settled into your new Mattamy home, one of the things you probably plan to invest in is a way to keep your home secure and safe. No matter how safe your neighborhood is, it is still always a good safety precaution to protect your home from any unwanted intruders who may be lurking around when you are not home or out of town. You know you want to protect your home, but what is the best way to ensure it’s safe? Below are the top safety tips to keep in mind when selecting the right choice for your home.

The first thing you will want to be sure and do, especially if you are moving into a new home, is to maintain your doors and locks. Be sure that over time, you keep up with the quality of the door and fix any shortcomings such as gaps along the frame and hinge strength.  If the hardware on any of your exterior doors starts to wear or get damage, be sure and replace it immediately.

Lighting is the next element that can play a big role in how safe your home is, and how easy of a target you are to intruders. A home that is poorly lit on the exterior is a target for thieves looking to sneak in and out with no one looking. This also goes for inside of your home, where a home appears pitch dark on the outside alluding to someone not being home.

The best way to combat poor home lighting is to invest in motion detector lights for the outside of your home, that will go off when prompted near windows and doors. If you happen to have a large property or backyard, floodlights are a good idea to add to keep a broader range of vision over your property.

For the interior of your home, put some of your lamps on timers throughout the house to go on at dusk. This will ensure that once the sun goes down, the lighting in your home doesn’t go with it. Even when you aren’t home, the lighting in your home will always give the illusion from the outside that someone is home. It also prevents you from having to leave a light on 24/7 when you go out of town, which can also be detected by someone casing your house.

Spare keys are a great thing to have when you lock yourself out of your home, but can also be a detriment to your safety if not used correctly. Not only the location of a spare key if kept outside your home, but who you lend your spare keys out too. Be sure to only give spare keys out to a few people you trust, or an even better tip is to give out the garage code instead. If you are going to leave a spare key outside your home, don’t put it under a doormat or in a fake rock. Choose a place that not even the smartest intruder would think to check.

Next, keep track of your windows and keep up the integrity of them just like you do your doors. A window is the second most common place an intruder comes in, other than a door. Make sure to keep windows locked at all times and be sure hinges are not loose.

An alarm system is the final and most common way people protect their homes. The cost on an alarm system can range from $100 to $1,200, depending on what you choose and the features you’re looking for. Typically, the monthly charge on an alarm system is around $40 per month. If you don’t want to commit to a system with a monthly fee, consider the alarm systems with the video at the front door which can deter intruders without having a full security system in place.

Lastly, popular video doorbells like Ring and Nest have quickly gained popularity over the years, as they are a great way to keep your home and family save. During the holiday season, it can also be a good way to keep an eye on your packages and hopefully deter and porch thieves that may be looking for packages on doorsteps.

Adding some or all of these tips above, will help you sleep easy in your new home and have a sense of peace that you are protecting you and your family for years to come.

Can house plants really help clean the air in your home?

Categories: New Homes in Raleigh | Posted: December 6, 2019

Now that the holiday season is officially in full force and Christmas is just weeks away, many of us are getting our homes ready for company. Most homeowners want to give their guests the smell and look of a clean home when they come to visit. However, have you stopped to think about how clean the air is in your home? Mattamy Homes, a premier homebuilder for New Homes in Raleigh, shares if house plants can really help clean the air in your home.

There are a lot of all natural products out on the market these days, and many people have been under the impression that a great way to clean the air and toxins out of your home can be done through house plants. However, that is actually not the case at all!

In 1989, NASA did a study to see if they could find new ways to clean the air in space stations. They did get some interesting findings, however the fact that house plants clean the air was not one of them. However, many news articles wrote stories about the study and spun it so it seemed that house plants could eliminate or help remove toxins from a home. This however, is not the case.

It turns out that the people of NASA created a machine that involved some household plants, in their study and did find some good health benefits in terms of the air quality. However, the plants themselves did not do anything in terms of changing the quality of the air around them.

Articles published on this study on the other hand, named the plants used in the study and touted them as “air friendly” plants that could help clear up the pollution and toxins in the air around them. This however, is not the case and was a falsehood that went around during the time of the study, got picked up by media outlets and has stuck since then.

For example, an EPA reviewer who did a study after the review came out said that someone would need to purchase about 680 plants in their home, to achieve the results of the NASA study. Most homeowners could save themselves the time and just vacuum more often!

However, this should not deter you from purchasing house plants for your home or throwing out all of the house plants you currently have! House plants are actually proven to boost peoples moods. Especially if you live in the city where you may not see or have much greenery around you, house plants can give you that added freshness and nature-like feel in your home to help lift your mood no matter what time of year.

There are studies that prove house plants can improve your concentration, your calmness and productivity.

So, consider adding some house plants to your home this holiday season to lighten the mood of your home!
