Successful Groundbreaking on Valentine’s Day

Royal Oaks Homes and Operation: Coming Home celebrated Valentine’s Day with an exceptional groundbreaking ceremony for Operation: Coming Home V recipient, Corporal Cody Stanton. 21-year-old Stanton was injured by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while his unit was training police in Afghanistan in January of 2o12. Stanton lost both legs, one above the knee and one below as well as two fingers after his unit drew fire. This young man deployed with the 21st Military Police Company (Airborne) from Fort Bragg’s XVIII Airborne Corps in November 2011.

Since this tragic incident happened over a year ago, Stanton has been recovering while undergoing various surgeries. He was announced the fifth recipient for Operation: Coming Home on January 20, 2013 at the N.C. State/Clemson game held at the PNC arena in Raleigh. Stanton, a native of Raleigh, chose to have his home built in Forest Springs, the Royal Oaks’ community in Holly Springs.

The groundbreaking for Stanton’s home took place on Valentine’s Day, a few weeks after the public announcement at the N.C. State game. The ceremony was crowded with Stanton’s family and friends, his platoon and major, his soon-to-be neighbors, Royal Oaks Homes, Operation: Coming Home and the Triangle Veterans Association. Valentine’s morning was chilly but beautiful. Thankfully the USO was there to provide hot coffee and doughnuts for breakfast and delicious hot dogs for lunch.

Everyone was in great spirits as they all crowded around to enjoy a wonderful and emotional event. Look out for local news coverage on this event.
