How to create backyard privacy

Summer is in full swing and if you are like most, getting outside and enjoying the beautiful temperatures of summer is just what the doctor ordered. Especially after a long day at work, there is nothing better than enjoying dinner out on your back patio or a nice drink with friends or neighbors once the sun goes down. However, if your current backyard space doesn’t give you the privacy you desire, you may be missing out on that backyard experience you crave. Royal Oaks Homes, a premier homebuilder for new homes in Fuquay-Varina, shares tips on how you can create your own backyard oasis on your own.

It is safe to say when you want to sit outside your backyard and enjoy a nice mean or drink, you want to do so in privacy and not have noisy neighbors or the sounds of traffic around to disturb you. Your backyard space should be a place of relaxation and not disturbance. If your backyard is not currently as private as you would like it to be, consider these tips to give your backyard oasis more privacy to enjoy for many years to come.

First, if you don’t already have a fence or wall in your backyard, consider adding one for privacy reasons. Even if you don’t have a pet or kids to keep contained in your yard, fences and walls provide a great deal of privacy and come in all shapes and sizes to your liking and budget.

If you are worried about the upkeep of a wood fence, vinyl fencing is a great alternative. Vinyl fencing resists discoloration and is available in a wide range of colors and styles.

If you are looking for a fast an inexpensive fencing option, a wood fence will be the best route to go. You can even buy prefabricated sections of wood fencing from your local home improvement store and install it yourself in a few days, if you want to go the do it yourself route.

Stone or brick walls are a different type of touch that can create a long-lasting barrier. You can pair a stone wall with screens or greenery to keep it from looking too prison-like.

An alternative to fencing or walls would be to place evergreens along the living space of your backyard, to essentially create a fence or wall out of trees. If you plat these yourself, it is best to plant them in a zig-zag pattern to create a fuller visual effect.

The most popular hedge plants to use for a barrier in your backyard are arborvitae, boxwood, yew and juniper. Ask your local florist or landscaper about the upkeep of each of these options or any they recommend, as some require more upkeep than others.

A lattice or louvered wood panel is another way to create some privacy in your backyard or possibly around your eating or entertaining area. It is best to anchor any type of screens you put up into the ground, so you don’t have to worry when gusty winds or storms come that your setup is going to take a hit or get damaged. Fabric panels are another inexpensive and easy way to provide privacy and create a more intimate setting.

If noise is an issue where you live, consider adding a fountain to your backyard. The rush or gurgle of the water in the fountain may be enough that it helps drown out the traffic or noise around you.

When it comes to fountains, there are simple off-the-shelf options or more custom options you can go with, starting at $100 and up to the thousands. Be aware of the size of the waterfall you choose. The larger the waterfall or the more facets the water has the fall, the louder it will be.

Implementing these tips into your own backyard will give you the privacy and relaxation you desire and can enjoy with family and friends over the years.
