MPG's For Your Home? Learn What A HERS Score Is

When you purchase a new vehicle, you want the most fuel efficient car possible to save you money at the pump. So why wouldn't you want the same thing when purchasing your home? Developed by RESNET, the Home Energy Rating System Index (HERS) is the industry standard by which a home's energy efficiency is measured and the nationally recognized system for inspecting and calculating a home's energy performance.

How it works

A home rated on the HERS Index will be given a score ranging anywhere from 0 to 150, based upon its energy performance as determined by a certified RESNET Home Energy Rater. The LOWER the score, the more energy efficient the home.

The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that a typical resale home scores 130 on the HERS Index while a standard new home is awarded a rating of 100. Therefore, a home scoring 70 on the HERS Index is 30% MORE energy efficient than a standard new home – which makes a Hunter Home almost 30% MORE efficient than another new home built to code, and almost 60% MORE efficient than an existing resale home.
